Who is eligible for this procedure?
Hysteroscopic resection of fibroids is a safe and effective treatment option for many women with uterine fibroids. It is a minimally invasive procedure that removes fibroids from the uterus.
Delve deeply to understand who is eligible for this procedure and the factors influencing the eligibility.
-
Age and Health Status
Age doesn’t determine whether someone is eligible for hysteroscopic resection of fibroids. However, we consider the overall health status and medical history.
- Women with underlying health conditions like heart disease or lung disorder make surgery risky. Also, pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant should avoid this procedure.
-
Size and Location of Fibroids
The size and location of the fibroids are the most crucial factors in determining whether hysteroscopic resection is an appropriate treatment option. Women with small fibroids seen in the uterine cavity are ideal candidates for this procedure. However, if your fibroids are larger than 4 cm or present in other uterine areas, we may not recommend the hysteroscopic resection.
-
Other Factors
Some other factors that may affect eligibility for hysteroscopic resection of fibroids include the number of fibroids present and the patient’s menstrual cycle. Women with multiple fibroids may not be suitable candidates for this procedure.
- It may be difficult to remove all the fibroids during the same surgery. Also, the timing of the menstrual cycle can impact eligibility. We perform the procedure often during the first half of the menstrual cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
Q1) What is hysteroscopic resection of fibroids?
Hysteroscopic resection of fibroids is a minimally invasive surgical procedure involving the removal of fibroids inside the uterus. Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause symptoms, including heavy bleeding, pelvic pain and infertility. The gynaecologist performs the procedure using a hysteroscope, a thin, flexible tube inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.
-
Q2) How is hysteroscopic resection of fibroids performed?
Our gynaecologist performs hysteroscopic resection of fibroids on an outpatient basis under local or general anaesthesia. During this procedure, the skilled expert inserts a hysteroscope into the uterus. The camera attached to the scope provides a view of the inside of the uterus on a monitor. After that, small surgical instruments are inserted through the hysteroscope to remove the fibroids.
-
Q3) What can patients expect during and after the procedure?
Before the procedure, the patient will be under anaesthesia to ensure comfort and reduce the pain. After the procedure, patients may experience mild cramping, spotting and discharge for a few days. They should avoid strenuous activities, sexual intercourse and tampon use for at least two weeks after the procedure.
-
Q4) Will I need to stay in the hospital overnight?
We perform the procedure on an outpatient basis in the majority of cases. That is, you can return home the same day.
-
Q5) When should I follow up with my doctor after the procedure?
You should schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor one to two weeks after the procedure. It ensures you are healing, and you can discuss further treatment or concerns.
